Since 1877 the Ruffino Winery has been a stable in the Italian wine scene. Originally a winemaking venture between two friends who enjoyed making wine, but not farming they purchased grapes from local farmers in Tuscany. Over the years the estate grew and subsequent generations were not as concerned about farming, so the estate gradually bought an increasing amount of land until present day where it is one of the largest wineries in all of Italy both in terms of land owned and amount of production. Production grew so quickly, in fact that Ruffino was the first Italian wine to be exported in bulk and is largely responsible for opening many international markets to Italian wine, specifically Chianti and Chianti Classico.

As with every Italian winery Ruffino has been both harmed and helped by the incredibly restrictive Italian wine laws. While the laws are antiquated they also serve the purpose to continue age old winemaking techniques that help to romanticize Italian wine in international markets. The current relaxation of classifications has allowed the estate room to experiment with blends of many different varietals including some which are native to Italy and other more international versions. As an example in the 1990's then estate started producing The Romitorio di Santedame - an intriguing blend of Colorino and Merlot. One of the only wineries in the world to blend these two grapes, Ruffino shows it's ability and willingness to experiment which has quickly become the trademark of world class Italian wine production.

Ruffino's history is long and extremely complex complete with family ownerships transfers, arguments and everything that you'd expect to accompany a piece of land that has had grapes planted on site since the year 1000. The current owners have continued to make wine on the estate in classic Italian fashion. They believe that all great wine is crafted in the vineyard, so they spare no expense in insuring that the grapes which are harvested are the absolute highest quality. Also, since they are still family owned Ruffino makes sure to farm in such a way that the winery can be open for another 1000 years. The last thing any family member wants is to be the one which ruined the land for all subsequent generations.

In the past ten years as production has continued to expand and international wine travel has become ever more common Ruffino has recently opened a visitors center which allows visitors to the estate to not only taste the wines, but receive a tour and learn about the history of both the winery and the property that it sits on. Ruffino likes to say that in every glass you get to experience a little bit of Italy, in that I couldn't agree more.
